David Gandy's Underwear Designs for M&S

After years of modelling them on catwalks from Milan to Paris, David Gandy has designed his own underwear collection, exclusively for Marks & Spencer. The capsule collection, entitledDavid Gandy for Autograph (M&S's premium department), comprises 28 items ranging from boxers and briefs to sleepwear.

"Partnering with a great British brand like M&S felt the perfect fit right now," Gandy told us. "We've been working closely for a few years, so it felt like a natural progression to collaborate with them on my own range."

Making the jump from model to designer is no easy transition, but one that he found easy to make.

"I've genuinely enjoyed every part of the process and feel proud of the results," he said. "I wanted to combine quality of fabrics, good design and fit, and an element of style with each piece to form the basic essentials for the range."

But he hasn't abandoned being in front of the camera completely though. Fans will be pleased to hear that Gandy will be modelling his designs for the accompanying campaign ("I still enjoy modelling and that has given me various opportunities to explore other things too - it will always be at the heart of whatever I do").

According to M&S, their new signing is an inspiration for men while being irresistible to women.

"I have to be honest, from sketching designs, choosing the fabrics, adding personal touches and even down to the packaging, I've been really involved and thoroughly enjoyed it," he revealed. "I'd love to do more if the opportunity came along."

David Gandy for Autograph will be launch in London on September 18, after which it will be available in stores worldwide and online.

I once met David Gandy in his pyjamas

 By Hannah Betts

Writer, muse and now underwear designer for M&S – the world’s most famous male model is the whole package, discovers Hannah Betts.

Should teenage boys ever feel unhappy about their body image and general manliness, they will be consoled to learn that David Gandy – aka Dolce & Gabbana’s “White Pants Guy”, the world’s first and last male supermodel – once sported puppy fat. Even on entering modelling, at 21 he was told to lose weight and it was only at this grand old age that he acquired his first girlfriend.

“Everyone goes through different stages and your body changes very quickly”, he tells me. “I grew this way [he gestures out]. Then at 17 I shot up to 6ft 2in and was a little bit gangly. I actually don’t think this was a bad thing. It’s almost nice if you have … [he steels himself] … if you are very good looking and you have all the attention. It’s probably still quite alien and I’m probably still quite shy about it.”

Moreover, old friends from his Essex home are always “mickey-taking and ribbing” our Adonis-proportioned hero by sending images of themselves in tight whites entitled: “Ready for the next campaign.” He emits a throaty chuckle, provoking a complex geometrical configuration of blinding teeth, azure eyes and bronzed bone structure. Me: “I am so going to do that later.” Gandy (resignedly): “I’ll give you my text.”

Gandy’s world domination came in the wake of his star turn in Dolce & Gabbana’s 2006 Light Blue commercial as the aforementioned White Pants Guy, a Testino creation that clocked 11 million internet hits within day one of its launch. Trawl your fevered imagination and you will find the image: Capri, cerulean sea, white boat, a terracotta Gandy – plus pecs! Six-pack! And a by-no-means insubstantial Gandy package! Well might his initials be DG (as friends refer to him).

Since that time, Gandy has not only continued to play muse to his Italian pals and appeared for countless couturiers and designers, he has become the face of Christmas at M&S and Johnnie Walker Blue Label; he produces apps, finances films, writes and guest-edits. His Blue Steel Appeal for Comic Relief (named, rather brilliantly, after Zoolander’s male-model pastiche) raised more than £250,000. He held his own in an Absolutely Fabulous sketch and was the only male model to appear alongside Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and co at the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony. This year he was cast as Jennifer Lopez’s love interest in her First Love music video.

At the weekend it was announced that Gandy is to design a collection of men’s underwear for M&S, putting him in direct competition with David Beckham, who collaborates on a range with H&M.

I have met 34-year-old Gandy before: he clad in an impeccable Dolce dressing gown, me in a scarlet La Perla negligee, deep in Claridge’s, the lighting dim. It was the July 2011 Tatler Pyjama Party. We danced … in the sense that his gal-pal and I were forced to form a ring of steel around him to prevent other females crowd-surfing toward him. The sight of Le Gandy packaged for the boudoir meant that emotions were running high. When he gave me his email address – entirely for journalistic purposes – I experienced what it is to feel physically threatened by an entire room of baby-doll-clad females. Think a John Waters movie, only posher, straighter and 4000 times more hysterical.

What I was struck by was his abiding niceness and utter obliviousness to the Gandy Effect, despite its causing girls and gay men to bite chunks out of each other to get near him.

For Gandy is that rare thing: the objectified male, aka, the chap who gets treated the way (too many) men treat women, ie, gazed at, salivated over and dealt with as if not entirely human. Were he the star of the aforementioned film it would be entitled The Man Who Makes Women Behave Like Builders.

When I tell people that I am to interview the Most Handsome Man in the World, to a man/woman they all say: “Oh, right, David Gandy?” Together with the other David, Gandy is one of only two global name in male pulchritude. Does he mind being treated in such a lunatic manner? “Not particularly, if I’m honest. I’m not a woman, so I can’t feel what women do in that respect. It’s fun.” Now I think about it, I have not encountered many men who would be appalled by such circumstances.

In January 2013 he became an ambassador for LC:M (London Collections: Men) and it is in this capacity that I meet him, the menswear collections having begun yesterday. Traditionally, Britain’s menswear was a mere afterthought tagged on to the fag-end of the women’s shows. Today it has its own biannual slot – now in its fifth season, spring/summer 15 – with Gandy, Dermot O’Leary, Tinie Tempah and Nick Grimshaw as sundry inmaculate ambassadors.

Gandy is articulate on the subject of fashion as a business with a convert’s evangelism, having fallen into the industry after a friend entered him for a modelling competition. “We [Brits] started everything. Half of Savile Row is now Asian-owned. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but it’s a sad thing that we can’t invest in our own history. It’s a question of keeping the heritage in this country. The rest of the world loves everything British. We have that mix between the very traditional and the very fashion-forward. The UK menswear market has grown by 12 per cent in the past five years and it worth £10.4 billion.

“I love my country. People will say this during the World Cup, but then they’ll get in their German cars and go to their German washing machines and fill them with Abercrombie & Fitch. And you think: ‘Why don’t you support your country in other ways?’” Our dapper Prince Charles is one of his role models. “Prince Charles never, ever gets things wrong. You won’t get anyone better. Recently I had to go to a wedding and I was wondering about dress and straightaway I googled ‘Prince Charles morning suit’. He is an icon.”

He is equally British about his looks, blushing and fumbling bashfully with a manly thigh when I ask him what he makes of them. “I think you’ve got to be pretty strange to say: ‘Look, I think I’m very, very handsome.’ “It’s not very English? “No. We’re not always great at shouting about what we’re good at. That’s why LC:M started.”

This is a great deflection from me asking you whether you’re good looking. “I’ve been well-trained.”
Gandy is an Essex boy minus the accent, Billericay-born and bred. His father left school at 15 and alongside Gandy’s mother built up a line of companies involving freight-forwarding, travel and property. Gandy studied multimedia marketing at the University of Gloucestershire, which he claims taught him only that he didn’t need to go to university. I don’t buy this: this is a man who knows everything there is to know about marketing.

This is evident not least in his decision to stick to his guns (pun intended) and wait out the trend for weeds and waifs until a taste for his type of tanned manliness returned. Was this confidence? Stubbornness? “Stupidity?” he offers. In fact it was bloody canny. He took female supermodels as his paradigm and replicated not only their strong, sexy glamour, but their management, PR teams and branding. And, boy, has this strategy worked. Still, he tells me: “I would die to be a Levi’s guy.” Bur you’re White Pants Guy, I retort, incredulous. “Yes, but, they were so iconic.” So is your package, I reply.

He trains daily, usually at 9:30 to 10pm, when everyone else is in couch-potato mode, maintaining: “There’s no magic trick. It’s hard graft. The physics behind a six-pack is that everyone has a six-pack, it’s just that some can be hidden.” He won’t talk politics, but I can see Gandy not merely expanding his brand supermodel style, but doing a Jamie Oliver or a Mary Portars – both of whom he admires – and becoming a campaigning hero, whether for health, fitness or, as now, the fashion industry.

He certainly has the charm for it, in addition to the wits. He tell me I am beautiful when I compare my vampire skin to his bronze, admires my jacket and offers to score me a ride in a vintage car race in which he will be competing. Yet he doesn’t flirt or trade on his looks, as a lesser man might, which is brilliantly refreshing somehow – not least as Gandy in flirt mode might be likely to generate earthquakes and tsunamis. US Vogue recast him as Superman and it is as if he is in Clark Kent mode, unleashing the full White Pants Guy only when required.

The day after we meet, Team Gandy send me tubs of Wheyhey, a healthy ice cream he’s backing, to cure a hangover from which I was suffering. As ever I am struck by the fact that our hero’s looks are as nothing to his personality.

Day 3 (June 17th, 2014)

The last day of this fifth LC:M lets us finally see the latest Gandy x FennellSpring/Summer 2014 Collaboration. Inspired by the 1920s summer, the Art Deco or the Great Gatsby, a wink to the classic sophistication of the 1920s, or in David's words; 'real gentleman's style'. You can read more about the designing of this great suit in Fennell's blog.

While we are truly admiring David's style choice of the day from the jacket, to the suspenders or braces all the way down to those gorgeous shoes, there is something else we were loving. David showing up to several shows in a gorgeous Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe.

The Best of LC:M S/S 2015

The fifth installment of London Collections:Men has come and gone and we'd like to take a look back at David's style and some of our favorite pictures. It's not a LC:M without David Gandy sitting at a show in the front row wearing an impeccable tailored suit.
This year did not disappoint because he also threw in some casual pieces. We saw David in gray a lot this time starting with his Welsh & Jeffries suit during the day then a gray M&S blazer paired with black slacks and a white waistcoat for The One for the Boys Fashion Ball in the evening.
Day two David went for a more casual style pairing a pair of Lucky Brand Jeans with a gray M&S blazer, Thom Sweeney shirt and Club Monaco tie. As we would notice this year David would go through a few wardrobe changes for the evening parties. To the Tommy Hilfiger dinner he wore a Tommy Hilfiger gray windowpane suit.
Day three was when he wore his much anticipated outfit that he collaborated on with Fennel. It was another casual style for David, cream blazer, blue trousers with suspenders, his signature v-neck tee and Burberry shoes and his best accessory for the day a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. For the final party of the LC:M's, The GQ Style Party David donned a beautiful blue suit by Reiss.

David Gandy for Marie Claire Spain (July 2014)

David Gandy is featured in next months spanish magazine 'Marie Claire'. For this intimate interview, the spanish photographer Pablo Zamora captures him in Dolce & Gabbana, through a series of pictures that shows us both his celebrity and personal side. To complete he talks to Marta Falli about his rise to the top, his shyness and how he doesn't talk about his private life.

DAVID GANDY: BLESSED YOU ARE

He is the highest God of a sparsely populated Olympus of male models. The British model took five years to become famous, but things are not easy or quick when your ambition is to change the game. Gandy talks about his very masculine passions while revealing a point of shyness, an old boy of the bunch and some other lovely weakness.

David Gandy is the number one of the male models, but his name has not always opened doors for him. When things were beginning to go well, he was no more than the guy in the white pants in the Light Blue fragrance campaign by Dolce & Gabbana. Clients who called his agency used that information to identify him. Despite this, three years ago he reached a certain celebrity status. Among other things, David demonstrated expertise in how to do a dramatic entrance when he drove a vintage Triumph through the center of Milan to get to the boutique where Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were launching the book they had dedicated to him. The latter is an honor that few women, professional colleagues - significantly better paid than men in their sector - have enjoyed. The volume in question is already in the second hand market with stratospheric prices. "It is extraordinary that a fashion shop show so much respect for a model - Gandy said today - the feeling is mutual."

He agrees to talk on the sunny terrace of the headquarters of Dolce & Gabbana, he's perfectly tanned, hair combed back, wearing a light gray suit with a pocket square and a few buttons of his shirt are unbuttoned. David is himself a brand worth half a million pounds a year; it shows that he is conscience of it, he’s had to work hard to get it. "In castings they always told me the same thing: 'You're too fat'. I remember the noise of the seams ripping when I pulled up the pants. " David Gandy was the classic type for catalogs, which translates into a decent apartment, a nice car and, in general, an affluent lifestyle. But ambition did not let him sleep. "It was tough. When you become famous overnight, you do not have time to learn. It took me five years, but I knew where I wanted to go." He speaks his words with confidence and lengthening the vowels to add some drama. What did he want to achieve? "I wanted to change the game," he replies. While they all told him to loose weight, David went to the gym to grow his biceps and pecs. "I did not have the same physical structure of these androgynous, rock star looking guys which was the standard at the time." Until one day he received a phone call from his agent: he had been selected, but didn't know for what. "There was a casting, Domenico and Stefano wanted the guy wearing sunglasses in the photos of their campaign. It was the fall / winter 2006 campaign, photographed by Steven Meisel, in which David Gandy is dressed like a gentleman and had a guitar in his hands. Shortly after I was in Capri with Mario Testino. "Each of us - Mario, Domenico, Stefano and I - we knew what we were doing was going to be relevant," he recalls.

Born 34 years ago in Billericay, Essex, the son of working class parents who he says he learned a lot from. "I've never seen anyone work as hard as my parents." Now living in London (while his sister Claire lives in Spain): there Gandy just finished renovating a Victorian house in Fulham. Go in search of antique furniture is a passion for him, mentions design as one of his main interests, next being watches & cars - many have compared him to James Bond for this - and the suits he has tailored on Savile Row. "My style reflects the English tradition." It is not uncommon to find him on best dressed lits.

In any case, we discovered his most consistent trait is his shyness and that is not exactly the first word that comes to mind seeing him writhe half-naked on a bed in the photos of Mario Vivanco. The second revelation is that he reveals little of himself beyond what he has decided to be his public image: the classic male. Do you not fear falling into a stereotype?. "I like to have my private life be private, reserved only for the people who are close to me." When he speaks, he sometimes smirks, like if he's thinking of something funny. Listening to him he seems to have suffered bullying when small; he also maintains that it has never considered himself handsome, "it's not that girls would show great interest in me. The first person who made a comment in this regard was my grandfather when I was almost 18. Talking to my mother he said, 'David is becoming a very handsome man. "Indeed, it was not his idea, but a roommate enrolled him in a contest which led him to start working in the fashion world. "I had just finished college and he told me that maybe I could work as a model for a while before finding a real job."

Today, David's activities have multiplied: last September he launched a fitness app for mobile, has a fixed column in GQ, addresses four charities, one of them is Blue Steel Appeal, which refers to movie Zoolander, which precisely parodies the world of male models. "At last, after working with brands, not for brands, so I think I've entered the best phase of my career."

The tabloids go crazy to know the names of the women in his heart (Mollie King, Sarah Ann Macklin or Samantha Barks are some of the ones mentioned). He replies without hesitation: "I do not talk about my private life." But there is a love which does not spare compliments: "when I drive in my car, I love speeding," he whispers without revealing what cars and, above all, how many he has. He adds, "you find yourself working in the public eye and this sometimes means sacrificing privacy."

El Mundo Spanish Newspaper (June 2014)

David Gandy is featured in today's edition of spanish newspaper El Mundo, interviewed by Agustina Henrich Lagdrid.

He rubs shoulders with Gisele Bündchen on the cover of magazines and on the runways. At 34, this Englishman with gentlemanly ways is considered the best model in the world.

David is one of the 100 most influential men in England. He defines himself as a shy person, but carries the same initials of the ones that made his image in bathing suit a symbol of masculinity. Thanks to the fragrance by Dolce & Gabbana, he has become the star of an industry that has always been ruled by women. Besides being considered the best model in the world, he is also a writer, dog lover, and Jennifer Lopez new guy ... and he hates doing crunches. However, he shares his beauty secrets through his mobile applications. Here's David Gandy, a Briton who has stolen everyone's heart.

EM: How is your relationship with fame and popularity?
DG: I've always been very shy. For this reason, being in the public eye is not very natural to me. And though most photographers have always treated me with great respect, I try to keep my private life away from the cameras.

EM: We read a lot about your exercise routines, but how do you get those abs?
DG: Believe it or not, I work hard on my abs because they are my weakest area. But I confess it's not an area I like to exercise, I find it tedious.

EM: What is 'David Gandy Fitness'?
DG: It is a mobile application through which users can access my exercise routine. I've tried to make it varied and that it will suit both men and women.

EM: And in relation to food, what is it that you can not resist?
DG: Actually, I try to eat sensibly and as healthy as I can. Also if a person increases their metabolism enough, you can eat most things; but I stay away from processed or packaged foods, I can not help but enjoy the cakes, sweets and burgers, but in moderation!.

EM: In addition to the fitness app, you also have one on style...
DG: Yes, David Gandy Style Guide was born from a real demand. Many men would ask me about my style and asked me for tips and advice on how to dress. Men do not have sufficient information on styling at their fingertips; there are few magazines and websites where they can go to. So I try to bring to the users basic fashion rules for them, simplifying the things I've learned from my own work and, of course, thanks to the greatest artists and stylists worldwide.

EM: It is clear that you are into 'technology'. What is the 'gadget' that you can't live without?
DG: I don't go anywhere without my blackberry, but something I really love is the music player I have installed throughout my house that I can control from my iPod. I create a musical environment in the rooms to my liking.

EM: How would you describe the experience of recording a music video with Jennifer Lopez?
DG: It was really great. Working with her and director Anthony Mandler was a real honor for me.

EM: The image of you wearing the white pants in Tirreno for Dolce & Gabbana has been converted into an iconic image for the firm, including one of summer...
DG: Since 2006 I've been the image of Light Blue, the fragrance of the brand, and it's something I feel very proud of. The funny thing is that these are the only pictures I've done in a swimsuit. However, they are the images that people remember. It is assumed that I am the face of Dolce & Gabbana. As for as the white bathing suit, it is true that in recent times it has gained much popularity; it was transformed into a fashion icon, the it garment .

EM: Being accustomed to the London weather, few can relate to the sun and heat, has that hindered you channeling the 'beach boy' inside?
DG: No, it has not been a problem because I spend a lot of time in Italy and Spain. Also, possibly by the tone of my skin and dark hair I look more Italian than English, and the truth is that in Italy I feel at home. Must be that delicious Mediterranean climate.

EM: The place that David Gandy chooses to rest...
DG: Although I spend most of my time traveling, I have not had a vacation in two years! But when I take a few days I prefer to be more active, like skiing, a sport that I love. Another activity that I really like is trekking. On my last holiday I hiked in Uganda.

EM: What 'look' does your style app recommend for a 'beach party'?
DG: I think it depends a lot on each person and on the time of day that the event is. But it is always wise to wear good quality linen garments because it works perfectly for an event at the seaside or for a party at night. And, of course, a pair of designer shoes.

EM: The perfect woman is...
DG: Perfection is a woman who makes me laugh.

EM: And where would you take her for dinner?
DG: I would invite her to the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

EM: Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?
DG: In my personal life I hope to be settled with a family, but as far as my career it is impossible to get an idea. Things change very fast.

EM: You've conquered many fields. Writing, modeling, working with charities and acting. Anything else?
DG: I'm going to launch my own clothing line with Marks & Spencer, it's a project in which I have been involved, from the design sketches to production and packaging. I've been very anxious but I've enjoyed it too. And beyond that, I have many aspirations and ideas in mind, but that will have to wait.

Yesterday, David Gandy attended RBS ESSA Gala Awards in the University of Exeter Enactus Society in London. More than 300 students from more than 30 universities attended the awards, which were hosted by former Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt and presented by the world’s leading male supermodel David Gandy, Britain’s first medalist at the Winter Olympics in snow sports Jenny Jones and Top Gear’s original Stig, Perry McCarthy.

The RBS ESSA (Enterprising Student Society Accreditation) is designed to recognise and reward the enterprising work being done by students who are members of societies and illustrate how everyday society activities such as marketing, driving new membership, managing accounts, hosting events and raising funds are demonstrations of entrepreneurship.

This 30th of June, DjG celebrates its 3rd anniversary online. This year we are premiering a new and revamped website that replaces the previous one (existing since 2012) with a more modern style, and a look and feel that is more clean and bright.

The most substantial change in this third version is, without a doubt, the expansion of the team that works daily to maintain DJG online. And to them, these three amazing women who at different times were incorporated as permanent staff, I personally want to dedicate this post. My greatest gratitude towards them: Melissa Feijoo-Viro (July 2012), Ellen Widom (March 2014) & Lisa Rosenberger (May 2014). Thank you for your dedication, professionalism and great sense of humor that never disappears. It was unthinkable for me to imagine, even in 2010, that one day we would be four friends from different parts of the world that  would have fun with the day to day management that this site needs.

And with this, and from the whole team, thanks again to all those with whom we have had the pleasure of collaborating with this year. It has been pleasure and an honor to have worked with you once again and, as you know, our doors are always open to collaborating again.

In closing, thank you all for joining us for another year and contributing, like us, in the endeavor to make the name David James Gandy resonate in all parts of the world.

Thank You!

Two in a boat

The design duo Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have an amazing ability to unite beautiful people under their wing. The long-term cooperation with Monica Bellucci is the eloquent proof. No less brightly this pattern can be seen in Light Blue campaign – this pattern can be seen just as brightly in the Light Blue campaign – a pair of Italian Bianca Balti and Englishman, the beauty has become almost perfect. This year, the models have become the faces of new versions of fragrance –.

Escape to Panarea for women and Discover Vulcano for men. And this was the reason for our meeting in Milan (Bianca’s home city) on the eve of the autumn display.

Harper's Bazaar: I cannot help but ask: What helped you to cope with the task on the set? I mean, you are not actors but according the scenario you played a couple passionately in love on the boat swaying on the waves?
David Gandy: We’ve never met before the shooting. I think I didn’t hear anything about Bianca before.
Bianca Balti: Seriously? And I've heard about you! Do you know what really helped us? The sense of humor. I think it always helps. You know, I lost balance and fell of that boat several times. We pulled together quickly and this is all due to David. He is a great professional and a real gentleman.

Bianca, and how would you describe the ideal man?
B.B.: He should be caring - I want to be sure that I can always and in everything rely on him. I always feel beautiful next to him.

HB.: David, what attracts you in women especially?
D.G.: Sense of humor is the one important point. And it’s always great when an incredibly attractive girl does not take herself and her appearance too seriously.

HB.: If we compare the classic Light Blue and novelties Escape to Panarea and Discover Vulcano which would you prefer?
D.G.: I like it when girls wear fresh fragrance, so that the classic version is ideal. I myself often use The One.
B.B.: Escape to Panarea replaced the good old Light Blue on my table. Its sweet woody-musk new fragrance reflects my character. I'm Italian to the bone. Even my English has a characteristic accent.
D.G.: Good strong Italian woman.
B.B.: Yes, that’s the compliment that I would like to hear – a strong woman.

HB.: David and what is the best compliment for you?
D.G.: I am pleased to hear when they say I’m modest.

HB.: What do you do to keep in shape?
B.B.: I do not stick to diets and do not deny myself any pizza or pasta. I was lucky with genes.
D.G.: I do exercises every day. The best place for it in London is Bodyism. I also like running along the Thames and I’m trying to eat healthy food. I would rather prefer fish to meat.

HB: Can you share a couple of secret addresses of your favorite beauty salons?
B.B.: You can get an awesome facial in Istituto San Celso in Milan, and the best masseur is Walter Zank
D.G.: I always get my hair done at Daniel Hersheson in London. Larry King never fails.
